Motivating Employees

It is possible for a manager to motivate an employee; it all comes down to communication skills. Meaning that if a manager has poor communication skills then there is little to no way motivating an employee to do the required task. The motivation of employees is sometimes an easy task, but then at other times a trying task.

The manager could offer some sorts of incentive as with extrinsic motivation to motivate the employee, but then the employee might think that with every task required by the manager there should be a reward. The manager should find a way for the employee to see the fun in the task so then no incentive would be required like with intrinsic motivation.

When it comes to dealing with intrinsic motivation; if the employee were to have a little more information about the required task then the employee could find a fun way to go about doing the task. Like if the employee were required to entertain the client in order to get a deal then the employee could research the client and find a specific interest they both have in common. This way the employee would have fun with the client while working at the same time.

If the manager had to end up going with the extrinsic motivation the incentive could be that the employee would receive a free lunch or a paid day off for whenever the employee wishes. The incentive does not necessarily have to be extravagant; sometimes the littlest offering make all the difference. The manager could also inform the employee that even if there were no incentive that doing this one task would also be a good thing to put on the employee’s resume (if the employee chose to be with this company for a short time).
