This article focuses on how human resource management (HRM) practices are developed and influences by national factors. Thailand and Singapore are rapidly developing industrialized countries. Thailand is considered to be one of the originators of HRM practices as a result of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. The 1997 crisis caused currency to fall into frenzy, the property values were declining at alarming rates, and unemployment began to rise. With the difficulties Thailand was facing, human resource managers knew there were opportunities. After the financial crisis, institutional reforms to regional nations started to reevaluate HRM. HRM policies have nature that is considered context-specific where the environment of different prominent elements on HR practices in Thailand and Southeast Asian regions are seldom examined and analyzed in literature. Human resource managers and policy makers have to realize what HRM practices their counterparts can carry out and have an idea of how they read and understand HR theories and concepts. This article continues to focus on national factors and organizational strategies within Thailand.
