The characteristics that convey the message to the intended audience consists of “awareness of purpose with clear, sufficiently developed and effective writing that is correct and fluid”. (Hood 2012 page 23)

Dr. Robley Hood gives an excellent presentation of what is necessary to produce a written message with well thought out reflections that that are clear and concise. She highlights that sentences must run smoothly from one to the next, as paragraphs should follow a logical order and move seamlessly from one to the next.” (Hood 2012 page 19).

These characteristics are highlighted in formal writing, as the message in the communication is written with purposeful intention. When a formal communication is written, where one thought leads to another, and the opinions are strengthened and tied together in a summarizing way, it becomes a very powerful way to convey a persuasive missive to a person of authority. During the last two years, I spent hundreds of hours writing documents in preparation for my divorce court proceedings. My objective was to enumerate sequences of events, and successions of proactive roles that I played throughout my children’s lives, to show the judge that I should be the primary custodial parent for my children. An informal or conversational style of responses to the family court judge would have been ineffectual and would have diminished my persona. My audience was the judge, his judicial subordinates, and the court clerks. There was no compromising in formality with these authoritarian figures. I took into consideration the seriousness of “my audience” and wrote accordingly.

In my future career as a Child Advocate in Family Court, I will adopt this policy in writing assessments and reports to the Family Court Judge, as these the reports will be critical in deciding custody for minors.
