Immortality is Worse than Death

In our society, the idea of immortality has always been glorified in movies, television, and book stories. People like the idea of never dying and seeing the world for a long time. With immortality, people don’t have to see their loved ones die and say goodbye forever, and people can do whatever they want since they have all the time in the world. However, when studied and observed closely, we see that immortality can be worse than death. While many people like the idea of not being able to die, immortality, however, is worse than death because it doesn’t give people a chance to live their life with full meaning.

The idea of immortality will get you trapped in a world that isn’t perfect. In the book “Gulliver’s Travels” by Jonathan Swift, the main character, named Gulliver, encounters a creature called the Struldbruggs. Struldbuggs are in fact, immortal creatures that the main character meets in the story. In the story, Gulliver is very excited to meet these special creatures. So excited that he started imagining what he would do if he also becomes an immortal. Some of the plans he has planned is to gain more knowledge and gain more riches saying, “I should be a living treasury of knowledge and wisdom, and certainly become the oracle of the nation”(Swift,177). However, when he met the actual creatures, Gulliver finds out that being immortal is actually bad and he felt ashamed for even fantasizing about being immortal. One of the downsides of being immortal is that the Struldbuggs becomes very morose, rejected, and are incapable of affection. People like the idea of not dying because they want to stay on earth forever with their loved ones and never missing am event throughout their lives. However, when a person really thinks about it, is staying on earth forever a good idea? Why do some people believe in heaven?
