Poland Experience

The life of a immigrant migrating to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was not an enjoyable relocation. The immigrant suffers through all of the transition process to the United States was extensive, exhausting, and full of questioning. All immigrants faced more than one barrier since their background or their heritage. This story is going to talk about the experience of an immigration when she decided to leave her home country of Poland making a journey she will never forget. Her adventure begins in Poland in 1905 and ends in New York.

My name is Jennifer and I am a 23- year old girl, I live in Eastern Europe (Poland). At this moment, where I live things are not so wonderful. My main reason for me wanting to go to the United States mostly rested on the effort of suffering at home as well as the bad opportunity of economy, religious discrimination, political persecution, and the pull of the expectation of a better life in the "Promised Land" ("Immigrating To America, 1905", 2000). I made the decision to leave everything and everyone it is going to be hard but I want to improve my life in the United States. My journey started once I cross Europe to reach Ellis Ireland, since I can not pay for first or second tickets to board the steamship, I have to go through administration before I continue on with my aventure to "The Promise Land."

My journey to get to a coastal town enclosed hundreds of miles cross Europe. I mostly traveled by foot, but along the way I met some kind people that gave me a ride on horse every now and then. Once I boarded the ship, I got sick to death asking myself how was I going to live for the next twelve days. I got into a ship to make the journey across the ocean to the Harbor of New York.
