Analyzing Movies

Analyzing movies and music from a sociological perspective involves focusing on the social problems, social roles and cultural aspects. You can look at anything constructed by humans including history, religion, art, sexual morality and fear. A sociological review might also discuss a film from the screenwriter or director’s perspective, as well as at the audience’s reaction to the film. By applying sociological theory to themes in the movie you can reflect on how the movie relates to true or perceived social behavior. A sociological review of music might include the song writers and musicians perspective, also look at the demographics the music appeals to.

First Step: Focus on Sociological Theory

Think of which of the three main sociological theories best relates to the movie or music. Does the film/music represent conflict in social structure, or is it a micro level examination of a social norm? Perhaps the movie/music shows a dysfunction of society, which would be best explored using Functionalist theory. Then apply this theory to analyze the main events or themes in the movie. For example, you might look at any universal concepts, such as love, death or power,that are addressed in the movie/music. One route that makes a sociological analysis of a film/music more intriguing is to look at unexpected observations that are surprising to the audience.

Second Step: Formulate Your Argument

Start by noting what you think the film/music is saying from a sociological perspective. Back your theory by including evidence from the film or music, such as quotes and scenes that explore the social issues. Include specific events that lead up to those points noted in your argument. What you should not do is to summarize the entire movie. Stay focused on what parts of the movie apply to your sociological review.
