2i What can DESCON do to improve the BMX Cycles operations?

In order to improve BMX operations and increase production, Descon should follow a proper product development process as follows

Phase 0 Planning

This involves the approval and launch of the product development process. In case of bikes it can involve business goals assessment of technology requirements to produce bikes.

Phase 1 Concept Development

This phase involves the description of the form, function and features of a product and a set of specifications. In case of BMX cycles it is essential that a proper design and features of the product is defined before production starts so as to minimize any wastage.

Phase 2 System- level design

This phase defines the overall layout of the product, the specifications of the subsystems and a preliminary process flow diagram for the final assembly process. This is crucial to BMX as bikes include a number of components.

Phase 3 Design detail

This phase highlights all the unique parts to be used in the production of the product. Thus in case of BMX the main focus is on the cycles’ components requirement and there specifications including seats, handle bars, pedals, tyres etc.

Phase 4 Testing and refinement

This is the prototype building stage. The prototype will allow the product to be tested before the actual production takes place. In BMX case the cycles produce will be according to customer requirement and thus there will be minimum wastage.

Phase 5 Production ramp-up

In this stage the any flaws in the production process are rectified. The product is made using intended production system. The workers working on the assembly line of BMX will be properly trained so as to produce cycles according to set production standards.
