Situational Analysis

Tran Trong Minh Khoa, a Vietnamese IT professional, is facing a huge dilemma and only had a few days to make one of the most important decisions in his professional career. Khoa’s current position is the Deputy Director of Software Development Centre No.5, where he oversees a department of approximately 50 employees whose main focus is on software applications for E-government management. In 2009 a great opportunity became available for Khoa; he received an offer to become the Director of the Software Development Centre No.3. Even though the emphasis of this center is also in software applications, their concentration is in the health and educational fields. This promotion is a step up in Khoa’s career; however, the position comes with a few obstacles to which he will be required to find a resolution. It is essential that these complications receive immediate attention due to the fact that the issues are in customer relations and human resources. Khoa had to carefully consider and analyze many different factors in order to make the best decision for his professional career.

Problem Statement

Khoa’s biggest predicament was the uncertainty of not knowing what do, whether to accept or reject the promotion. Khoa had to consider all the positives and negatives aspects of the offer and then evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of each. Khoa’s main concern in advancing to director was the current undesirable situation found in Centre No. 3. Khoa had to consider every little detail to make his decision and understand what his new position as director will entail. What is upper management’s objective? What is their short term and long terms goals? Will Khoa be given the tools necessary to make the required changes in the department?
