Baby Wise

 

1. According to Baby wise, are human infants Good (equipped at birth with positive tendencies), Bad (have innately bad tendencies at birth, Blank Slate (have no skills, abilities, or tendencies at birth)?

After reading several articles on Baby Wise, we have learn that according to Baby Wise human infants are bad. For example, according to Dr. Robert Buckham, “The main purpose of parent-controlled feeding is to quickly instill a sense of order in the newborn’s mind.” For Dr. Buckham, babies that have been fed on demand, quickly grow used to immediate gratification and become more demanding. Another Philosopher, Thomas Hobbes, had portrayed children as selfish and bad. For Hobbes, it is the responsibility of the society to teach children how to behave properly.

2. According to Baby Wise, should development of an infant be shaped by Nature or Nurture? What is the most important force?

Baby Wise gives more importance on Nurture since they are trying to teach parents socially. Based on Baby Wise beliefs, the social environment must have strong influences on infants in order to make them acting in a civilized manner because naturally they are born badly. Baby Wise believes that newborns should be taught that they have been controlled. Therefore, several parents have taken Baby Wise courses that had mentioned infants should be feed every four hours. This idea contradicts the American Academic of Pediatrics that suggest to feed infants every two to three hours.

3. According to Baby Wise, Do babies develop the same? - Universal or differently - Particularistic?

According to Baby Wise newborns are universal .Based on the founders of Baby Wise, “Feeding newborns every two and a half to three hours around the clock will suit all babies,”(Ezzo, 1984).
