IT decisions should never be exclusively taken by the IT department within an organization. The decision in what to invest, what is required, where should the IT capabilities be implemented and how the decisions are to applied must be made in conjunction with senior executives and based on the strategic corporate goals of the company. Otherwise, major decisions left exclusively in the hands of the companies IT staff may lead to an IT infrastructure that is out of touch with the corporate strategy, an excessive investment in unnecessary tools or in tools that are beyond the company’s needs. In turn this results in pressure on the IT department to respond to ensuing cost of the investment with the return expected by upper management.

IT decisions should always be made with input and from senior management, those responsible for the corporate identity and strategic direction of the company. Otherwise IT spending will generally be geared towards decisions based on what IT staff perceives as being correct. Additionally, more likely than not, IT staff will implement and install tools which are overly expensive in order to cover all possible ANGLES of the perceived strategic direction of the company.

Like any investment made within an organization, proper planning and guidance is necessary. Therefore senior management must provide the necessary direction to IT staff about what to invest in, how much can be spent, what are the companies required capabilities, what is required of the IT features, what are the acceptable risks/security issues and which executives within the company are required to participate in the IT projects. In turn IT staff must be able to provide necessary technical input with regards to the proposed IT decisions to be made.
