Theoretical Orientation Paper

Throughout the Masters in Mental Health Counseling Program at Walden University various theories have been examined related to counseling clients. Through progress in the field experience courses the student is able to begin to refine a theoretical orientation. This paper will examine the development of the student’s theoretical orientation in addition to examining the types of clients in the Practicum setting, how the problems of the clients originate and techniques and interventions to use with the clients.

In addition, this paper will address how professional training has led to the development of a solid theoretical orientation in Internship I. Examples of two case conceptualizations that have informed the development of a theoretical orientation are examined along with how the theoretical orientation is in alignment with the best practices at the field site. Additionally, a synopsis of how skills, knowledge and philosophies have been incorporated into clinical practice is given.

A description of where Practicum and Internship took place is provided along with the role with the population is specified. A report of how this writer’s theoretical orientation has evolved over the course of field experience is defined along with how the theoretical orientation was applied. Additionally, a description of how this writer’s theoretical orientation was influenced by the population served. Finally, a summary of a clinical presentation including conceptualization, summary of presenting concerns, treatment planning, strategies and interventions is provided. The conclusion will reflect on the entire field experience and the development of a theoretical orientation paper.
