Surah, Ayah, Juz

The holy Quran is divided into 114 surahs, surah’s are chapters, and they are of

unequal length. The longest surah consists of 286 verses and the shortest

surah is only 3 verses long. Every surah has a name, each surah name and

number is displayed on the top of each surah. Surah’s are divided into sections

according to their meanings. Each surah consists of Ayah’s, Ayah’s are verses.

The Quran has 6247 Ayah’s. An Ayah sometimes consists of more than once

sentence. It is the shortest division of the Quran. There are also Ruku’s in the

Quran, this is when you bow down to the ground in respect of Allah the

almighty in prayer.

During the month of Ramadan the Quran is recited in the taraweh prayer over

30 days, therefore the Quran is broken into 30 juz. The holy Quran is also

divided into 4 parts and another in 7 parts which is called manzil, which allows

you to complete the Quran in 7 days. This division has no correlation with the

subject matter.

Subject matter: The holy Quran is the book of God, and it was revealed to the

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), it is a guide on how one should go about living

their life, it has solutions to problems that we may face in our life. It covers

beliefs and rites and topics such as marriage, divorce, birth, life, death, and the

hereafter, Paradise, hellfire and many more.

Language and style: the holy Quran was revealed in the beautiful language of

Arabic, the reason for this is that it was revealed in Arabia and it had to be

understood by the people of the land, just as how the Torah was revealed in

Hebrew. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his mother

tongue was Arabic, if it were to be revealed in another language people would

question him and he would not be able to answer them. Arabic is a rich

language, every word has an in-depth meaning which can take few sentences
