XMGT 216 Business Ethics Paper

It was back in 1995 when I was working for Pepsi, I do remember a time when I was faced with an Ethical Dilemma in the work place. I used to drive truck for them and had a route where I would sell cases right off the truck. My main customers were convenience and liquor stores. These owners basically were the “Mom & Pop” stores that paid cash right out of the register for everything. I was driving around with a rolling warehouse full of different type of Pepsi owned drinks. I was just put on this route because the driver before me was fired for stealing. So I was the new guy and also the clean up guy. I was liked by management and was told this new route was very high exposure. So the better I did on this clean up task, the better my chances were to get to the next level.

Little did I know that I would be faced with big decisions to make and become very unpopular for making good moral decisions? I quickly found out why they liked him and it put me in a big ethical dilemma.

The driver before me used to load extra inventory from the warehouse and sell cases of soda for a cheap cash price that went into his pocket. The worse news was I was asked daily from the customers for “the cash special”. Just doing some quick math work in my head the cash special could make someone over $500 a week in cash. I am not sure how long this went on or exactly how Pepsi could have this much inventory missing every week I was shocked and began getting very nervous. Thinking about the cash amount was the scary part because “I thought about it.”

However my virtue ethics played a role and I really had to think of who I am. I am not a thief...
