The unsung hero Charles drew was the originator of the idea of a blood bank and the first director of the American Red Cross blood Bank. HE Is a hero because his effects have helped save many lives.

Drew was born June 3, 1904 in Washington D.C. His parents were Ricard t. Drew a carpet layer and Nora Drew and school teacher (contemporary). They were a middle class family. At the age of twelve Drew would help the family income by working as newspaper seller (contemporary). Drew had excelled in academics and sport. He won had won four medals by age eight. He graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar high school in 1922. It is recognized as the nation’s top educational facility for students of color. He had received the James E. Walker memorial medal his junior and senior year for athletic performance. Drew had participated in several sports (scientists). Since Dunbar was famous for its disciplined atmosphere and rigorous curriculum, which balance academics and sports drew was able to excel in both. He also eared four varsity letters for different sports. With those achievements in high school Drew eared an athletic scholarship to Amherst College in Massachusetts.

Once drew graduated from high school he attended Amherst College. The years at Amherst provide Drew his first experience of life away from home (contemporary). His freshman year he spent a lot of his time socializing and focusing on sports. He was the captain of the track team and the star half back on the school football team his grades soon stared slipping. Hamilton Bims noted in an article for ebony that Drew was summoned to the dean offices for a pep talk about the relative importance of brain and brawn when career choices were being made (Contemporary). The dean told Drew that a Negro athletics are a dime a dozen. His grade didn’t slip after that. He would soon decide to become a doctor and not dare risk being rejected from medical school for focusing on sports top much. He would soon manage to graduate...
