Reaction Paper in the Film “Marka”

The film tells the life story of Billy Santiago on how he becomes a victim of bullying. It covers his life from his childhood to his college. The film also shows a series of flashback showing Billy Boy on his childhood is a subject of ridicule. The title of the film “Marka” (in English translation is mark) means that whatever you do, either bad or good things, will leave a mark in a person’s mind.

The film introduces us to the awareness of the bullying. Bullying may happens anytime, anywhere, and to anyone. Like in the situation of Billy Boy, he first experience of being bullied in his elementary days by Rocky and Diego up to his college. The film also included real life stories of bullied victims like Paula Jamie Salvosa (more known as the Amalayer girl) on how she overcome the cyber-bullying. This film indeed is an advocacy against bullying.

I commend the director of “Marka” for its open-minded idea for making the film. He lets us see the actual situation of a victim of bullying by using Billy Boy. Though I do not experience of being bullied for half of my life unlike Billy Boy, I understand how a victim feels facing different circumstances.

Being bullied has many outcomes. The bullied may feel the absence of self-confidence because the bullies contempt him. He may be frightened to face public because he feels humiliated. He may rather choose to stay home rather than to go outside and the like.

I particularly like the last scene when Billy Boy finds a person who can help him to end his situation. There are still people who are concern and willing to help those in need and I am one of those. I do like to recommend this film to everyone to watch. It is an eye-opener for those who are bullied knowing that they can do something to overcome this situation.
