High School Dress Codes, A Common Controversy

“Bette Midler once said, ‘I firmly believe that with the right...wear one can rule the world.’” According to Southwestern Academy, the dress code policy is that boys have to wear professional attire while girls wear casual attire. Ever since the dress code for Southwestern Academy was implemented, there has been a debate on whether a uniform is better or a dress code is better. Some people may say that Southwestern Academy should let students wear uniforms to have everyone wear the same thing, no arguments. But I think there are important reasons why we should maintain the current dress code instead of implementing a uniform. I support the argument that the Southwestern Academy should maintain the dress code policy rather than introducing a school-wide uniform because it is more comfortable, economic, and introduces an individuality that uniform does not.

The Southwestern Academy should continue enforcing the dress code policy because the dress code allows more freedom when picking clothes to wear to school and helps students stay comfortable during classes. Usually, when students buy clothes that follow a dress code, they look for clothes that are comfortable. Having to sit in class for over six hours is no fun and students try to avoid clothes that are too stiff or tight on them. Implementing a uniform may inhibit students from having the freedom to choose how comfortable they are in class especially when all students have different body shapes and sizes. Personally chosen clothes that fit the dress code would be made with better materials than uniforms that schools choose to make. Being comfortable in class is not the only reason why a dress code should be maintained, but also the fact that a dress code changes the budget a student can have to spend on clothes for school.
