Creating a personal and management development plan during the course of the Practicum involved more than simply contemplating what I wanted (personally and professionally) from my life and how to go about achieving it. This development plan was created to help me achieve my goals, which preparation was the key. It took a great deal of self-awareness which included a clear understanding of my personal values and ethics, analyzing personality characteristics, evaluation of learning styles and identifying my strengths, weaknesses, motivators, opportunities and threats.

Preparing for this development plan has been thought-provoking, encouraging self-evaluation, and reflection and realization of my self-improvement in my career, education, and relationships. I have analyzed my personality traits to understand how each one correlates with my strengths, weaknesses and tendencies. I have learned that my own observations and actions may be motivated by my feelings that automatically influence me. Although many traits stem from my personality, I learned it doesn’t mean I can’t develop and improve. I have learned how to use my strengths in better ways and turned my weaknesses into strong suits.

One important action I’m currently taking to become an effective leader is creating a plan for my success. This includes a personal plan of growth as well as a professional plan for improvement. Over time, through the Practicum course, I have identified some areas that I need for improvement and identified some leadership skills and practices that I will use to become an effective leader. I have created an outline of the goals that I consider a priority and a timeline for their development.
