Odysseus Timeline

Odysseus and his crew leave Troy.

They pillaged a city.

They visited the Lotus Eaters. Three of the crew ate a strange plant and lost the will to go home.

The Cyclops captures the crew. They sharpen a pole to poke his eye out and then escape by riding on the bellies of his goats.

They meet the Keeper of the Winds, who gives Odysseus a leather bag.

The crew opens the bag, releasing a hurricane that blows them back to where they started.

The Laestrygonians threw boulders at the ship and ate most of the crew.

The survivors landed on the island of Circe.

Hermes gives Odysseus a special herb to protect him. Circe turns the some of the crew into pigs.

Odysseus goes to the land of death.

Odysseus bleeds a sacrificial lamb into a pit to summon the ghost of Tiresias, the blind prophet.

Tiresias told Odysseus about his journey and how to die happy.

Odysseus and the crew had to pass the Sirens again. Odysseus plugged the crew’s ears with wax and tied himself to the mast of the ship so he couldn’t steer to shore.

The ship avoided Charybdis but was attacked by Scylla.

The crew landed on the island of the sun. They disobeyed his orders and sacrificed his cattle. Zeus destroyed the ship, leaving Odysseus as the only survivor.

Odysseus washed up on the island of Calypso.

The gods decided that Odysseus had been on Calypso’s island too long.

Odysseus’ home is filled with suitors for his wife, Penelope. His son Telemachus calls an assembly to ask for help.

Zeus sends two eagles to cut the throats of the suitors.

Telemachus leaves to find his father.

King Nestor tells Telemachus to seek help from Melenaus.

Melenaus tells Telemachus what he heard happened to Odysseus.

Zeus sends Hermes to tell Calypso to let Odysseus go. Calypso reluctantly agrees.

Poseidon destroys Odysseus’ raft. He washes up on land and falls asleep.
