Case Study: My Dairies, Inc.

1. Apply your knowledge of stereotyping and social identity theory to explain what went wrong here.

I believe Beauport feels she is being demoted even though the coordinator job came with a pay raise because she is presently in an assistant manager position, a woman and a minority. So now Syd Gilman, who only had the best intentions and shows no evidence of stereotyping, is being viewed from the prism of being a racist and sexist. I would venture to say that by Beauport jumping to interject her own biased opinions that she stereotyped Gilman due to previous employer’s actions and not by the actions of Gilman, her present employer. Gilman is acting with sincerity by offering Beauport a new position that will enhance her chances of future promotions brought by the exposure of working with high-profile projects. It seems to me that if anyone is stereotyping in this case it is Beauport stereotyping Gilman as apparently a typical white sexist racist male.

I believe Beauport’s social identity as a minority woman in a visible position in management makes her feel as if she is important. She feels that as being “one of the top women and few minorities in brand management” (McShane, 2015, p. 88) it makes her a valuable employee at Hy Dairies. I feel as a woman of color with this strong social identity that she felt she was not receiving the respect for the increase in sales that had resulted from her hard work. This may have led her to group Gilman with all her other male bosses which in this case she would have engaged in categorization, homogenization, and differentiation instead of dealing with Gilman and his actions on their own.

When I was working for my previous employer we had several women of color who worked security clearances.
