With everything in history, scholars ponder the question: Myth or Real? And Troy, an ancient city, provides no exception to this. Historians are pretty much deadlocked when it comes to believing whether the city is a myth, simply a figment of imagination, or in fact real. Which is why I choose to believe that the ancient city of Troy is in fact both or rather that parts of what we know about Troy is false, making it myth, but that part of it is true. It’s been pretty difficult for scientists and historians to prove that Troy was anything but myth, especially with Troy acting as a city whose only proof of ever existing is a book, The Iliad. The Iliad is an epic tale of war and mythology in which the defeat of a city called Troy is depicted by an author from the time period. The flow throughout the poem and the consistent writing style kept throughout the manuscript make historians believe that The Iliad could only be written by one man. That man is Homer. Even though Homer is considered the author, some people still doubt that his writing was completely true. Some historians even believe that the 10 year war was an exaggeration, thought up by Homer to make his epic more dramatic Even though evidence has shown that it was in fact only one man who wrote the Iliad, some historians disagree about the timeline of the stories. Certainly, the 13th century dates that Homer uses in the epic do match a site in modern day Turkey discovered by Heinrich Schliemann. But there’s a 500 year gap between when Homer wrote The Iliad and when the alleged Trojan war took place. Additionally, no other ancient civilizations have the existence of Helen in their mythology, including the ancient Egyptians, even though many other people in the future fell for the story, including Shakespeare himself. But the only other evidence of the Trojan War came much later than this, starting with Schliemann's discovery of an ancient city in Turkey, with inscriptions labeling it Troy. Where evidence of a...
