General goal: I will inform my audience on teen pregnancy.

Specific goal: I will inform my audience on the causes and effects of teen pregnancy, as well as prevention mechanisms to reduce teenage pregnancy.

Thesis statement: Even with the many contraceptive mechanisms and education classes, abstinence is the only way to completely prevent adolescent pregnancies.

Introduction

1. Attention getter: Teenage pregnancy occurs in approximately 3 out of 10 American females, averaging about 750,000 a year.

2. Listener relevance: Many of us can relate to having a classmate, relative, or even our parents being teen moms. If not, I believe we all have watched Teen mom air on television.

3. Speaker credibility: My nineteen year old best friend is currently pregnant. She has realized that there are many responsibilities that you gain once you become a mother. Many of us aren’t prepared for these responsibilities.

4. Thesis: Even with all the contraceptive measures, abstinence is the only way to completely prevent teenage pregnancies.

Causes of teen pregnancies

1. Most teenage pregnancies are accidental, yet some or planned.

2. The rate of teenage pregnancies is high in low-income families, as well as families with an absent parent.

3. The lack of education about contraceptives given to adolescents is also a factor in teenage pregnancies.

4. People that have weak family relationships and those who are raised by lower education parents tend to be at a higher risk for pregnancy.

The effect on the child

1. Around fifty percent of teen moms drop out of high school after giving birth.

2. Out of the fifty percent that did graduate high school, less than five percent obtain a college degree before the age of thirty.

3. Lack of an education can lead to the mother not getting employed or earn less income from their employer. Children that are raised by teen parents are often raised in poverty.
