Based on the little research available Hall and Fichman were able to develop a theoretical model of self-forgiveness to be used in future research. In this model the emotional, social, and offense related determinates of self-forgiveness where outlined and explained. The limitations of the model where then illustrated along with how the model could be used to enhance future reassert.

Reflection

I found this article very interesting. I have never truly thought about the concept of self-forgiveness and its complexity. I believe the article will not only raise awareness of the need for more research, but will be able to provide information that could be used for those in the field of counseling with their clients. The simple act of defining self-forgiveness in a way that is applicable across disciplines provides counselor and researchers a better starting point when approaching the topic of self-forgiveness.

One concept I found very interesting was the distinction between true self-forgiveness and pseudo self-forgiveness. It is intuitive for me to believe that it is not possible for pseudo-self forgiveness to have the same effect as true self-forgiveness, but with out research on the matter how can one be sure. When I read that the test for self-forgiveness cannot differentiate between the two, it made me wonder if it is difficult for a person or a counselor to know the difference. It also made me wonder if it is possible that simply believing that things are better can actually make someone feel better.

I also found the question regarding the appropriateness of self-forgiveness to be interesting. When a person believes something is their fault that is not, what approach should a counselor take? Is it more appropriate to spend the time and effort on...
