“Internet addiction disorder refers to the problematic use of the Internet, including the various aspects of its technology, such as electronic mail (e-mail) and the World Wide Web” (Beard 537-539). Many teenagers are both addicted to the internet and technology. Most of the devices that a typical teenager possesses are not vital for day-to-day living. Technology has become more and more popular among the teenage population, and it is being utilized for many purposes, the most prominent reason is communication. Having remote access to these luxuries, especially social networking, may pose as a threat to young teens. A teenager under the age of 15 should not have a Facebook account.

Facebook can be very distracting when one is trying to get their work done. Most people subconsciously find ways to divert their attention when doing an activity they have not chosen to do, and Facebook can provide little distractions that can build up very quickly. In many cases, the reason teenagers go on Facebook is not to communicate but to see what other people are doing. People are constantly “posting” pictures or statuses, and productivity gets limited. This idea of wasting time can also be seen through adults. “One third of the time that individuals spend on the Internet takes place at work, and over half of that time is not work related. A survey by Vault.com indicated that almost 88% of employees surf non-work-related Web sites during working hours, and 66% surf between 10 minutes and one hour” (Henle 146-147).
