COMPARISON BETWEEN THE FIRST OLYMPIC GAMES IN ATHENS 1896 AND THE MOST RECENT ONE IN RIO 2016:

The 1896 Summer Olympics was originally known as “The Games Of The I Olmpiad”, it was the first Olympic Games held in modern history, held in Athens, Greece from 6 to 15 April 1896.

Winners were given a silver medal, while runners-up received a copper medal. Retroactively, the IOC has converted these to gold and silver, and awarded bronze medals to third place athletes. Only 14 different nations participated in the games, of which 10 different nations earned medals. The United States won the most gold medals, which was 11, while the host nation Greece won the most medals overall, 46. The highlights for the Greeks was the marathon victory by their compatriot Spyridon Louis, while the most successful competitor was German wrestler and gymnast Carl Schuhmann, who won four events.

There was 9 different sports that featured at the 1896 Olympic Games encompassing 10 disciplines and 43 events, namely:

Athletics, Cycling (Road and Track), Fencing, Gymnastics, Sailing(which got canceled), Shooting, swimming, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

The 14 participating nations was: Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Chile, Demark, France, Germany, Great Brittain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and The United States.

In the 120 years that followed the 1896 Athens Olympic Games, another 26 Olympic Games took place and led up to the 27th Olympic games, which was the biggest one yet, held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 from the 5th of August until the 21st of August.

A total of 207 different nations participated (a list too long to even start) and 11303 athletes.
