Workplace Stress

Workplace stress is one of the facts of organization life that is unavoidable. Every job has its own stress, but management understanding the affect of workplace stress and involving in managing its resources and its affect on employees will reduce its reaction on production and create an easy work environment that encourage staff member to care for the product and feel their responsibilities and understand their contribution into work place production. “Scientists define stress as the pattern of emotional and physiological reactions occurring in response to demand from within or outside organizations.” (Greenberg).

There are many causes for stress that may have nothing to do with the work environment such as family member’s conflict, financial problems, and illness. Others job related stress such as role ambiguity, overload and under load, and a heavy burden.

One of the role ambiguity stressful situations I had to manage through re-directing responsibilities for employees in the accounting department in 2009. The economy challenges and uncertainty of the direction the company through these difficult time, there a few changes in reassigning job responsibilities after the elimination of few positions. I felt the stress of the uncertainty until I find out what needs to be done. I had to assure the employees that their job is secure if they follow the new direction and job responsibilities.

The overload and under load work-related stress is another stress factor. I had some stressful moments in my previous job while working in accounting department we as a staff had to close every month on its last day that resulted in a very stressful overload that led to spent between 12 and 16 hours to finalize the end of the month closings.
