1. Explain how you would handle this situation if you were Charles Renfold?

First, I would post a notice in the file room recommending all smokers are to have

smokeless ashtrays and air fresheners at all times. I would also require the file room to be

thoroughly cleaned once a week, wiping down tables and vacuuming or sweeping the

floors. After I have posted the notice and verbally alerted the staff of the new demands

for smoking in the file room I would expect Darlene to do her job and get me the report

like yesterday. I believe in being fair and being kind to others, what one likes the other

may dislike, but when it comes to work, the main reason we are all here is to get the job

done.

2. Describe the policy on smoking that you would recommend to Redwood Associates?

As I mentioned previously, I would post a notice for all smokers to adhere by, to have a

mandatory office cleaning every week. I would enforce that you can only smoke if you’re

on your break. There would be a designated area for smoking, however if the area is

inside there would be smokeless ashtrays. I would demand that you wash your hands

after every cigarette break to cut back on the stale smell of cigarettes. As Manager my

primary concern of the employees besides there work, is to protect and enhance a

peaceful work atmosphere and to provide indoor air quality, giving a healthy overall

work environment.

3. Explain how this case would change if what bothers Darlene is not old smoke but the

smell of Alice’s perfume or Frank’s body odor?

First, there is a massive difference between having a genuine allergy or health concern

when it comes to fragrances and not liking the smell of people's colognes, aftershaves,

perfumes, etc. However, just because Darlene is bothered by the smell of Alice’s

perfume, she doesn’t get the right to complain unless it is a medical reason. If you start
