At the end of the play Mama says "He finally came into his manhood today, didn't he? Kind of like a rainbow after the rain.." (pg. 151; Act 3). In this play the author uses Walter to express different views on manhood, From all the events that were associated with Walter. I believe that Mama's view on manhood stayed the same throughout the whole entire play, While Walter's views on manhood changes from a bad view of manhood to a good view of manhood.

At the beginning of play Walter's definition of manhood was his social status, He thought of life as money. Walter said that a chauffer as "no kind of job" (pg. 73; I, ii). When Walter says this, he is trying to say that his job isn't really a job that he would get pride in, Something he isn't happy about, Something that isn't making his social status good. As a chauffer he thinks his social status isn't big since his view on manhood is his social status. Walter's view on manhood is bad because he is being selfish about his social status, When he should just care about his family rather than himself.

Mama's views on manhood stay the same throughout the whole play, Her definition of manhood is "Family not money" This view on manhood is better than Walter's and it is also a good one. Mama's definition of manhood is a good one, Because you shouldn't be selfish and think about yourself all the time and your money, You should always know that your family comes first, and that it comes before anything. Her definition of manhood stayed this way throughout the play, Because she cared about the family more than she did for herself, She didn't change her view on manhood at all, and she always thought of it in this particular way.

When Walter tells Mama that life is about money, Mama is dismayed because she thought Walter would already know that life isn't about money. Mama said that life is about freedom not money. This also relates to how manhood is about caring for your family not about...
