Marxism vs. Capitalism

Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels Marxism ideology is an economic and social system based on economic and political theories. The Encarta Reference Library defines Marxism or Scientific Socialism as “a theory in which the struggle of the working class is a central element in the analysis of social change in societies” (2009). In contrast, capitalism means to complete separation of economy and state. Capitalism is defined as ‘an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and distribution of goods, characterized by a free competitive market and motivation by profit’ (“Capitalism”, 2009). To sum up capitalism, it is individual right to live his/her life as they choose without harming or violating others rights.

It’s obvious that Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) failed. Depending on which article you read, there are multiple reasons why the system failed. Based on a mixture of facts and opinions the USSR declined due to political changes, economic policies, and discontent that can all be in the category of totalitarian. Totalitarian is defined as relating to or operating a centralized government system in which a single party without opposition rules over political, economic, social, and cultural life (“Totalitarian”, 2009).

To have one political party rule over all aspect of the state proved to be very challenging. One challenge was the discontent of the non native people of USSR populations. For years, many people were forced to leave their native land and become slaves to a state they resented, which caused discontent. When Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the USSR promoted freedom of speech, he up rooted a lot of emotion and political feelings that spoke with great volume at rallies and massive demonstrations. Political changes were another key challenge that caused a decline. Each political leader had a different ideology on the success of the state. The political party was...
