AND THE OSCAR GOES TO..

When was the last time you thought “Oh.. God, this performance deserves an Oscar.. It’s clearly the runaway winner..!”.. Very rare right..? In fact, my mind goes back to three performances

1. Russell Crowe in Gladiator

2. Robert De Niro in Raging Bull

3. Marlon Brando in The Godfather..

People say that “Politics” plays a part in the judgment.. Actually the fact is, the Oscar Jury has certain type of films and performances as their go to list.. And whenever they find a film or a performance in that category they just rule in their favor.. So let’s take a look at what the Jury likes and dislikes

LIKES:-

Holocaust Films: - The Jury’s love affair with the holocaust films is legendary.. In fact every year, American filmmakers make certain holocaust films in order to bag an Oscar.. Think about it, for which film did Spielberg win an Oscar for the first time: - Schindler’s list. Why Schindler’s list..? I mean, Spielberg directed at least 15 successful films before Schindler’s list including the likes of E.T, Jurrasic Park, Jaws etc.. The cycle flying scene from Spielberg’s Extra Terrestrial (E.T) is considered to be as one of the defining moments in film history..! Saving Private Ryan losing out to Shakespeare in Love in 1999 remains a mystery though..!

Play Handicapped: - In 2009 sean penn started his oscar speech by saying

“You hommo lovin sons of guns” after getting an Oscar for his performance in Milk..! After all what is common between Sean Penn, Collin Firth, Dustin Hoffman and Tom Hanks..? They all got an Oscar for playing mentally or physically disabled persons for films Milk, The Kings speech, Rain Man and Forrest Gump respectively .. Be it gay, retarded or anything for that matter, the Jury just love the disabled characters.. In fact, the Jury’s decision to overlook Tom cruise’s performance in Rain Man is much criticized by experts which are still considered to be the biggest mistake the Jury have ever made..!...
