Part I: Identify at least four ways King appeals to those who disagree with him, referring both to the audience from the original letter (“A Call for Unity”) and the more general audience he wishes to reach. Include examples from the text. Which of these methods is most effective, and why?

Ethical appeal: reach the audience from the original letter.

Page 1, King talks about why he was in Birmingham. He was serving as president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He talked about what this organization did for human rights and what he believed in human rights.

Emotional appeal: reach the general audience, especially the black people.

Page 3, King talked about how society treated the black people. He went into detail about a lot of examples. For instance, a six year old daughter can’t go to the museum, some restaurants or motels would not accept black people.

Rational appeal: reach the general audience and the audience from the original letter.

Page 4, he talked about the difference between justice law and injustice law.

Page 5, he talked about the assertion from eight Alabama clergymen was not logical. He used a log of examples to justify his reasons. For example, isn’t this like condemning a robbed man because his possession of money precipitated the evil act of robbery? Isn’t this like condemning Jesus because his unique God consciousness and never ceasing devotion to God’s will precipitated the evil act of crucifixion?

Page 6, he disappointed that fellow clergymen would see his nonviolent efforts as those of an extremist. Then, he justifies his statements.

Page 7, he used the quotes from Lincoln, Jefferson, Christian gospel to illustrate the nation and the world are in dire need of creative extremist.

Page 7, he explain why the country need human rights movements for black people.
