Asia is the most exciting, diverse and complex market in the world and the statistics are staggering. India is adding more than 20 million new mobile subscribers every month while China is now the world’s second largest economy. Substantial parts of South East Asia boast mobile penetration of close to 100% but still lag in broadband penetration. This is one of the opportunities that O3b’s latest announced customer, Sky Fiber, will be addressing as they roll out services in markets such as Indonesia and the Philippines. The average data rates per user in Indonesia, for example, are half that of users in Thailand and our new fiberquality, satellite-based global internet backbone has been designed to provide ubiquitous, affordable bandwidth to precisely these markets. We are also focused on breaking through the cost and quality barriers that have limited the reach and throughput of mobile networks in Asia. The emerging markets have built their telecommunications networks around mobile infrastructure but the backhaul networks continue to be a bottleneck. This problem is set to escalate with the emergence of 3G and 4G networks and the increasing volume of data. Satellite-based connectivity is often the only answer outside the metro areas but it’s high cost and high latency means that satellite is often the choice of last resort. With 130ms latency and substantially lower cost per Mbps delivered to our customers, O3b can change that equation.
