The effects of coal mining in nearby communities

The issue of global warming in regards to unsafe and unhealthy mining practices have affected all of us in one way or another. It’s been said that the world may come to an end if Americans do not take proactive measures to take care of our earth. According to Gardner (2010), “strip mining is the most destructive form of coal mining that America has ever witnessed” (Para. 3). The background information I read on this issue is that coal companies have little regard for human health when using explosives in nearby communities due to making a profit being the ultimate goal. My opinion on this matter is that I do not believe coal companies are solely responsible for human medical problems. Hopefully, when you are finished reading my blog, you will agree with me.

The issue of strip mining in nearby communities is a sensitive one. I do not believe coal companies are out to hurt individuals living in nearby communities. Coal companies, like many other companies, are in the business of making a profit. However, I do believe companies who work with hazardous materials have a moral obligation to inform local residents that strip mining will be taking place. Doing so would foster good community relations. Every cigarette pack has a warning from the Surgeon General; why shouldn’t residents receive the same courtesy? The end result would be informed citizens to decide whether or not they want to remain in their homes during mining activity. People should make responsible decisions regarding their own health. The mining companies and the surrounding communities should make an effort to work together so that a profit can be made without the expense of human health.

I believe it is safe to say that coal mining is a dangerous and unhealthy business to be in. While I understand the companies’ need for profit, I must take into account the safety and well-being of all individuals involved. It is important to determine who would...
