CJS 250 Introduction to Security

A branch of a discount department store has been in business in Georgia for approximately 5 years. The building was vacated approximately 7 years prior to this store opening by a larger department store chain that relocated to a larger facility. Since this department store has been located in this building there has been a continuing escalation of violence and drug activity in the parking lot (mostly after hours), and shoplifting from inside the store. The current security measures implemented inside the store are limited to signs stating that the store in under surveillance by a closed circuit security system with camera covers located in the dropped ceiling throughout the store. This covers and signs are currently a diversionary tactic as no real security system is in place (personal communication). Therefore the only real security asset inside the store is the dependency on the employees to monitor and enforce loss prevention. There is no serious indication that there is an issue concerning loss from theft by the staff.

The store is organized in the same basic manner that any other store of the type would be. The entrance and exit are co-located in the front of the establishment and are standard glass automatic doors. There are not detectors at the doors that would alarm to indicate that someone was shoplifting as they were leaving with any merchandise. There are four check-out isles in the front of the store located near the entrance and exits. Located directly in front of the last register there is a small officer area that is somewhat open and a glass front for monitoring activity in the front of the store. The shopping area is comprised of two sections that isles each containing merchandise. On the far right side of the store is an area that does not have isles, but is comprised of clothing racks and a shoe shopping area. The “back-room”...
