Changes

Since sustainability reporting was implemented, there have been numerous changes to how companies operate and how they affect the communities they are a part of. These changes vary from labour to environment to accountability (Vogel, 2005). The people that are affected by these changes also vary from the shareholders to the stakeholders and the consumers. The reason for some of these changes can be simply improving the way a company’s product is made to improving the quality of life for the workers and their community (Kramer, 2006). In turn the company can experience an increase in performance, product quality and social perception (Kramer, 2006).

With sustainability reporting, companies are finally becoming accountable for their day to day activities. It is no longer just about the bottom line and making a profit. There is a large amount of pressure from society on what they perceive to be right and companies sometimes must follow this perception in order to do business (Vogel, 2005). By being more transparent in what they report, it is giving consumers more reassurance in the quality of products or services they are using. By submitting a sustainable report, companies are stating that they are trying to improve what social, economic or environmental factors they have (Kramer, 2006).

The state of the environment is slowly dwindling and more and more people are becoming activists to ensure the sustainability of the planet. In order to do their part, companies are making changes in order to cut down on the carbon foot print they leave and showing the communities that are involved that they care. Home Depot, a major building and renovation store had stopped cutting down older and endangered types of trees to make their lumber which is a mass produced product (Vogel, 2005).
