Question 1 (30points): Selecting a specialty from the HR field, discuss how one of the "trainings" you received or gave would assist you in professional development within that specialty. Be sure to cite information from the SHRM website (where the starting info for the trainings came from) that supports your response.

If I chose to follow through with a specialty in the HR field I would chose a position such as the Employee Relations Representative. SHRM defines an Employee Relations Representative as a person who “Administers programs designed to establish and maintain effective employee relations through the uniform and equitable application of policies and procedures. Audits organization to identify employee relations issues, and recommends appropriate actions to address and resolve those issues. May participate in exit interviews and grievance procedures.” I believe that I would be successful managing a group of people and this class has attributed to my comfort level in this area. The “training” that I received that I feel would most help me in this area was done by the group that did their project on Safety and Security.

As part of their training portion of the project this group handed out a case study that was developed by SHRM. This case study displayed bullying being done by one employee onto another. As a group we concluded that the best possible solution was to terminate the employee displaying this inappropriate behavior. We felt that this employee deserved termination because the actions he was displaying were classified under workplace violence. SHRM defines workplace violence as “Intimidation, verbal abuse, threats and harassment, stalking, and assault and battery.” When an employee displays any form of workplace violence the best solution is to terminate them because I feel there should be no tolerance for this issue.
