Team Charter Assignment

The purpose for developing the charter is to help your team:

1. Clarify their goal and mission.

2. Determine how the team can best work together to achieve their goals.

The end product of this charter will be a contract - what the team “lives” by. It should provide a clear understanding that all members will be held accountable throughout the duration of the team. In developing your team charter, you should have an open discussion about the purpose and goals of your team, and how to best achieve these in terms of the group process. The contract will create the conditions necessary to maximize your team goals.

Your team charter should address the following items. Included are some questions that may help guide your discussion:

1. Your team name

2. Member information

a. Team members’ names and contact information

b. What skills, knowledge, talents and experience do the members bring to the team?

3. A clear mission statement regarding the team’s goals

c. Example: To improve the coordination between Sales and Marketing, improve time to market, and raise customer satisfaction with our products.

4. Specify the conditions that need to be in place so that the team can achieve its goals.

d. When, where and how does the group meet?

e. Is it OK to miss a meeting? If so, under what conditions?

f. Communication – primary means of communicating?

5. Discussion of roles and responsibilities for leadership / team management.

g. What roles are to be filled? How will they be assigned? Schedule of rotation?

h. Example: The team will consist of a leader, a scribe and an observer. These roles will be rotated among the group members.

6. Decision making process

i. How will decision be made?

j. Do all decisions have to be unanimous? If not, how are they decided?
