The usage of Nature by Robert Frost

Robert Frost, a famous American writer from the 19th century, utilized Nature to signify beauty, to make a comparison to life and death, and to illustrate the everlasting relationship between man and nature in many of his works. He focused on the dramatic struggles that occur within the natural world and the dark destructive side of nature. Frost also presents the natural world as one that inspires his characters into deep thought. For Frost, he uses nature not only a background for his poetry, but rather a central character in his works. Frost uses imagery, symbols, and phrases to state his mind and trigger the messages that are entangled in that particular emotion.

Frost often refers to nature by using a descriptive metaphor. He observes something in nature and then describes it’s characteristics in a way that every reader can acknowledge and relate to it. He leads his readers to make a valid connection, but never actually enforces his views or opinions on the reader. He does not focus on animals or individual people, Frost simply expresses multiple objects in very descriptive ways. He makes detailed analogies to some human concerns, therefore intriguing his readers. Frost always takes time to describe his scenes with sensitivity and care while using excellent poetic technique, especially figurative language.

In the poem, “Nothing Gold Can Stay” Frost uses the first four lines of the poem to give us a mental image of how delicate and magnificent nature can be. Frost expresses` emotions that are attached with Colors, such as green and gold; “Nature's first green is gold / Her hardest hue to hold” (Frost, 619). Green symbolizes the first mark of spring, the assurance of life, and a growth in vegetation. Gold, precious and desirable, is not considered here as a metal but as a color and signifies wealth.
