Ethical Actions Worksheet

Write a 100- to 150-word response to each of the following questions:

• Was there anything in either the University of Phoenix Student Code of Conduct or the Student Code of Academic Integrity that surprised you? If so, what was it? Why were you surprised? If not, why not?

Nothing really stood out as surprising to me throughout both of the test. Most of the topics to me anyway, seemed to have become a norm. Not just in school, but at work places and community gatherings. There are certain situations where some of the issues are irrelevant in other places such as school. For example, the 1 ½ knife used for cutting an apple may be acceptable in certain groups, (work). I used to carry a knife at work all the time for working purposes. However much I carried it, though I never forgot that some places it is frowned upon to carry such a knife. At the end of the questionnaire I couldn’t say I was surprised with any of it since it all boils down to common sense and common courtesy.

• What did you learn about the behaviors considered important for an ethical learner or student in the University of Phoenix learning community?

I learned that honesty is elemental in a learning environment. A student could cheat and get away with it; however, in the end they are only cheating themselves. They are cheating themselves of learning the material and getting the value of the education they are paying for. Also if a student gets used to cheating or taking shortcuts, they will hurt themselves when they enter the professional world. They will be without a good foundation of learning how to deal with problems ethically, not able to handle problems ethically could lead to terminations. If a student is caught performing unethically in school the student could be dismissed from school as well.
