Introduction

It is imperative that prior to configuring the WRT54G router for any customer to familiarize yourself with the router and its capabilities. This procedure guide will serve as a training aid to assists employees in maintaining a set process in providing computer and network support to our customers. Employees are required to document any deviations from guide.

What is Routing?

This guide is not designed to dive deep into routing theory but instead to serve as a balancing tool to ensure all employees have a grasp of general routing function and purpose. At its core, a routers main function is to connect two separate networks together and pass data between those networks. Additional to passing data between networks routers provide security and reduce network traffic. There are generally two basic types of routers hardware and software.

Hardware routers are physical devices developed specifically for routing optimization. When compared to computers, hardware routers perform less functions but its job of routing is perform very proficiently. Unlike hardware routers, software routers are not devoted to just routing. They process other services and are usually capable of running applications. Routing within a software router is normally installed on top of the systems operating system.
