According to the Tsai article (2010), how are cell phone and geographic information system (GIS)  impacting business systems? 

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) combined with smartphones with GPS systems activated have the ability to relay information to the consumer and back to the application company about a consumer’s location history so that targeted advertising can be personalized for the consumer. The best example of this is in the film Minority Report where the main character is targeted via biometric retinal scanners as he is moving through an area. Not only is his location being tracked by law enforcement, he is also bombarded by personalized shopping suggestions. GIS in combination with smartphone internal GPS could also be used for logistical tracking of personnel within a company’s premises as well as while traveling for business. If a company wanted to install software that could track an employee’s movements while traveling via the GPS on his or her phone, this might aid them in planning routes that would cover the most clients in a specific area or detect if they are really at a client meeting. This type of GIS could even track what they do after hours in a visited city such as visiting a strip club in the evening while on a business trip which could result in breaking company policy and termination. With gas prices fluctuating up and down there is website and an app called GasBuddy that lets you know what the lowest gas prices are in your area and the station’s location, this could also be used when traveling in an unfamiliar area to find the nearest gas station. The prices are updated by the consumers themselves. The availability of GIS can be used any number of ways and that would affect the business systems utilized.
