The cruise lines may need to revamp the daily operations of their ships. Following the Costa Concordia disaster, reports surfaced that there were people on the bridge of the ship, whom were not authorized to be there, the night prior to the accident (Pianigiani, 2012). Could these people have been partying with the captain and his crew? No one will know the truth to this disaster but the captain and his crew. The owners of the cruise lines must enforce strict policies that no one is allowed on the ships bridge except for the captain and the crewmembers, which are to be performing their jobs. This action will prevent additional distracts for the captain and the crewmembers while they are conducting their operational functions to maintain safety for themselves and the passengers on the ship.

The problem with many of the cruise lines is that they are not owned by the United State, therefore are they taking the same steps to ensure the safety of not only there staff but the passengers on board. The cruise lines should enforce mandated safety classes for the crewmembers, evacuation plans in place and practiced often to ensure that all crew members are fit to handle any disaster that happens. The ships should have equipment such as life jackets and lifeboats that far exceed the ability to serve every person on the ship. Finally, they need to appoint people that will be on the ships constantly to monitor the progress of the revised plan of safety and to ensure that all crewmembers and the passengers on these ships are following the rules set forth, but at the same time, they are to be conducting an operational safety review.

To increase the revenue that the cruise ships are bring in, they truly need to dramatically lower the prices and extend the days on the cruises to rebuild their reputation after so many of these disasters. Lowering the cost of an extended stay at sea with the new modifications in...
