Baby Boom to Bust.

1. In 10 years Australia’s population will have increased for 22 million to around 25 million. In 2011 Australia’s Net Overseas Migration (NOM) contributed 54% of the country’s total population growth.

2. A baby boom is a sudden, large, sustained increase in birth rates, often occurring after a period of high death rates. Those in the Baby Boomer generation were born post World War II, in order to increase the global population to account for the large amounts of people that were killed during the war.

3. An ageing population is a risk to bankrupt a country’s economy largely because a high percentage of the population will be unable to work and as a result rely on the pension. This means that there will be less members of the work force, less tax-payers and more people relying on the government for their income.

4. Compulsory Superannuation was introduced in 1942, and was enforced to ensure that people could maintain a decent standard of living once retired. Also put in place to reduce pressure on the government so that the amount of pension to be payed to retirees was sustainable.
