This research project will focus on the emergence of Microsoft during the early 2000s in the gaming industry. Despite no arcade or consumer electronic experience, Microsoft launched its Xbox console and became one of the world’s leading gamer consumers.

Problem Definition

In the late 1990’s, game developers were moving away from Microsoft’s Windows platform to work on Sony’s rising PlayStation 2 platform. This threat allowed Microsoft to enter the gaming industry with their first gaming console ever: Xbox which launched 2001.

The nature of Microsoft’s problem was entering an already competitive gaming market that was led by Sony’s PlayStation console. Microsoft needed to clearly come up with strategies that would let it enter and compete in an already competitive market. It had to come up strategies that would help it succeed, such as the concept of strategic launch time with regard to its console. It also had to deal with licensing and compatibility strategies. Furthermore, it needed to make sure it had an attractive pricing strategy. Since it was entering an already competitive market that was led by Sony’s PlayStation 2, Microsoft need to make sure it had efficient distribution channels and a successful marketing strategy. Microsoft had to make some important decisions to be able to compete in the market forcing it to make some cutbacks and take losses in hopes to gain advantages.

Microsoft’s challenge of a competitive market is very important to overcome. Since they have little experience in the gaming market, it is important for Microsoft to gain market share and customer loyalty. If Microsoft is not able to overcome this problem, it would loss its reputation and a lot of money.
