Communications and Collaboration Strategy

The art of communication has many elements that play a part in the strategy of collaboration. Identifying the variations of learning styles and personality types will allow individuals to communicate effectively and allow groups to maximize their collective strengths. This article will discuss a few of the elements that affect individuals and working teams with their ability to successfully prepare, exchange, and communicate information.

One of the most important factors to consider is the individual learning styles of the audience and group members. The diversity of learning styles can transform the delivery and content of any message. Based upon Howard Gardener’s Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, some methods of learning include Visual-Spatial, Intrapersonal, and Verbal-Linguistic.

The Visual-Spatial learning style can be identified if the individual prefers visual communication. This type of learning often includes charts, diagrams, and illustrations or images. The Visual-Spatial technique is used to physically show the message and creates a tangible method of messaging.

Another style of learning is Interpersonal. This type of learning is best for those who relate directly to the information in order to retain the message. Individuals who are Interpersonal communicators often prefer individual projects as opposed to group projects. They also analyze information before they are comfortable speaking about it.

An additional style of learning is Verbal-Linguistic. The Verbal-Linguistic style refers to learning that is best retained when verbally communicated. Individuals who prefer this method of learning and communication are often interested in speaking about topics of interest, telling stories, and participating in discussions or debates.
