Kwame Nkrumah’s Background

Kwame Nkrumah, whose original name was Francis Nwia Nkrumah, was born on September 21, 1909, into the tiny Nzima tribe in Nkrofu, a small village in the southwestern region of the British Gold Coast (present-day Ghana). His origins, although clouded by controversy, were indisputably humble. His early education was in Catholic mission schools and he taught at the Government Training College in Accra, the capital of the Gold Coast from 1930-1935.

During his years in High school and also the few years he taught in Training College in Ghana, Nkrumah came under the influence of Pan-Africanist scholars like E. Kwegyir Aggrey, whose firm belief in the Africa renaissance and the advancement of the Africans through purposeful education, inspired him to further his studies in the United States of America and the United Kingdom. Samuel R. Woode a veteran nationalist and Secretary of the National Congress of British West Africa and anti-imperialists such as Nnamdi Azikiwe (Editor-in-Chief of the African morning Post) and I. T Wallace Johnson all of whom were actively campaigning against colonialism and imperialism in Africa propelled Nkrumah into leadership.

Preparation for Leadership

In the United States. Nkrumah left shores of Ghana for studies abroad with deep memories of militant anti-colonial and anti-imperialist intellectual and political activities. Nkrumah left Ghana in 1935 to the United States, where he received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from Lincoln University, Pennsylvania in 1939. He also earned a Master of Science in...
