Discussion

This is an opportunity for students to discuss their familiarity with the health service and their expectations of it. Point out that it is considered good practice in the UK for doctors to have a “holistic” approach. They should take into account a patient’s feelings about their health condition and how it relates to their wider life. Ask how this corresponds with learners’ experience in the UK or their own countries.

Divide into two groups and then report back to the class. How do you feel about a visit to the doctor? Which of the statements below reflect your feelings? Can you add any more statements? I do not want to hear bad news. Medical professionals are there to help me. Maybe I am wasting the doctor’s time. I have a right to health care. I do not understand the system.

What would you expect to happen? The doctor will find out what is wrong with me and decide what to do about it. The doctor will discuss with me possible explanations for my condition and negotiate a plan of action. The doctor will write a prescription and get rid of me as soon as possible.
