Summary

The Poem, Goblin Market is written about two women, Laura and Lizzie, who are sisters and are able to hear the sounds coming from the goblin fruit market while at their house. According to the poem, the two sisters make all efforts to ignore the enticing calls coming from the goblin men at the market place but as time goes, Laura gets attracted to it. She decides to take a step and goes to see what is happening while her sister warns her against doing so. However, Laura gets too curious and hence, goes to the goblin fruit market where she is offered fruits by the goblin men, which she thinks is too tasty. Despite the fact that Laura does not have money for purchasing the tasty fruits, the goblin men are offering to accept a piece of her golden hair. She agrees to the arrangement after which she gorges herself on the fruit and then goes home to Lizzie. The results of eating the goblin fruits make Laura start wasting away making her sister go out and investigate the cause. Though the men try to tempt her into the same trap as her sister, Lizzie stands her ground causing the goblin men to turn violent trying to stuff the fruits into her mouth. She refuses and squeezes her mouth shut getting juice all over her body. When she goes back to the house, Laura is seen to kiss the juice around her sister’s cheeks getting herself miraculously healed, though painfully. Later, as mothers and married women, the two describe the goblin market experience to their children as a way of cautioning them against such temptations and educating them on the benefits of sisterly love.
