Strategies Used to Overcome Barriers in Order to Reach Effective Communication in a Health and Social Care Setting

Health and social care settings can be places filled with lots of different type’s barriers that need to be breached in a professional manner. If this happens then effective communication between client and staff can take place. However doing this might not be as easy as first thought, because in these settings a number of barriers can get in your way, ranging from emotional barriers to hearing barriers. So in order to overcome these different strategies have to be used.

One of the most common barriers that will be in a health and social care setting is an emotional one. This could be any emotion such as anger or sadness that could stop you from getting though to the person and achieving effective communication. In order for someone to over come this you have to me very calm and patient, good eye contact should always be made to show that you are listening to them. Your tone of voice is also very important as you don’t want them to think you’re attacking them, it is also important to try and remain at the same height level as them. An example of someone overcoming this barrier was at a local youth club. Due to it being the last youth club of the year, we decided to have a Christmas party where we would all go into the main hall and listen to someone perform to us. However when one boy found out that it wasn’t going to be a normal night and that he wasn’t going to be able to play the X-box he started to get upset. A few minuets later he was sitting in a corner crying and saying that he wanted to go home. However due to just arriving it’s the clubs policy to try and keep him there for a bit longer. So I went over to talk to him, when I got there the first thing he said was that he wanted to go home, and I knew this wasn’t possible so I had to try and get through to him in a manner that wouldn’t upset him even more.
