Dyslexia or Dystechia?

Learning disabilities have been around since the beginning of time; however, since most developed countries have only provided public education for the last century there was no way for researchers to conduct any significant scientific research that would allow them to understand these complex disorders. Today, learning disabilities still have many “unknown factors” which is probably the biggest reason why there is so much confusion concerning the methods used in testing and treating them. Starting in the 1980’s there were important breakthroughs by researchers and educators which led to strategies that were slowly incorporated into the United States public school system, and it’s sad to note that today there is still no overall school policies that effectively addresses the problem of learning disabilities.

It is my belief that psychologist and educators have failed in the past and are still failing today to adequately meet the need of students with learning disabilities. Specifically, the three areas that are contributing most to the problem are: first, the methods used in testing for learning disabilities do not correctly diagnose most learning disabilities, next, labeling the student by researchers and educators has created confusion which many times ends up doing more harm than good, and finally our public school system is out of date and unprepared to give the correct guidance for students with learning disabilities,

Defining Dystechia

You probably won’t find Dystechia in an English dictionary; however, it is Greek in origin and is derived from “dys” (poor) and “teachia” (teacher) so Dystechia “is a teaching disability demonstrated by an educator’s cynical view on education and conformity to an inadequate system. […] The results of dysteachia are demotivated students and high dropout rates” (Santos).
