Dyslexia, the Improtance of Early Diagnosis

Have you ever felt at war with words? Do you take the ability to read for granted? Many children and adults all over the world struggle every day to read. According to the National Institute of Healths’ research results, “Dyslexia affects at least 1 out of 5 children in the United States.” The (NIH) also found that, “Dyslexia is identifiable with 92% accuracy at ages 5 ½ to 6 ½.” (Bright Solutions for Dyslexia, Inc. (1998) What we now know). The problem today is that many people including educators still do not understand the importance of early diagnosis. Dyslexia not only affects children academically, but socially and, emotionally as well. What a child experiences early in life regarding the learning process will affect them throughout their lives. Even though some dyslexic’s diagnosed late in life do not have difficulties learning, studies show early diagnosis is crucial to the learning process.

Dyslexia is a specific “learning disability that deals with a person’s ability to process language.” (Bright Solutions for Dyslexia, Inc (1998) What is dyslexia). It can affect either written language or spoken language. “People with dyslexia can also have a hard time remembering, mathmatics, spelling, writing, and especially with reading.” (Bright Solutions for Dyslexia, Inc. (1998) What is dyslexia). Understanding the meaning of the word dyslexia will help explain how it affects the people who have to deal with this disability for the rest of their lives because it is not curable and it will never go away.

Many definitions of dyslexia exist today. The simple defition is, “Dyslexia is an inherited condition that makes it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell in your native language-despite at least average intelligence.” (Bright Solutions for Dyslexia,...
